Richard "Dick" Lee Apple, 88, of New Castle Indiana, died Tuesday, August 23 in New Castle Indiana following a battle with cancer.  Richard was born in Sulphur Springs, Indiana on March 31, 1923.  A 1941 graduate of New Castle High School and a 1943 graduate of the  Spartan School of Aeronautical Engineering in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  He was a World War II veteran. 

Dick, worked at Perfect Circle and then at Western Products of New Castle for 40 years as a draftsman and Production & Purchasing Manager. He was an avid model plane builder & flyer and a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), a Ham Radio operator - K9LZY, a self-made engineer, craftsman, mechanic, electrician, plumber and inventor as he renovated an 1890’s farmhouse.  He enjoyed camping and traveling.  He was an avid reader with a keen sense of humor & wit and a lover of public television and radio.

Richard is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Lea (Hutson) Apple, New Castle, IN and daughters Nancy Apple of Columbus, OH and Peggy Apple of Clarion, PA and preceded in death by his parents Orville & Henrietta (Plummer) Apple and his brother Jack Wendell Apple.

A reception in celebration of Richard Apple’s life will occur on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Marcum Funeral Home, 1402 Audubon Road, New Castle, Indiana. Mary Lea, Dick’s wife and daughters Nancy & Peggy Apple will receive friends & family from 2pm-4 pm.
