Raymond L. Smith, 91, of New Castle passed away Wednesday January 4, 2012 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie following an extended illness.
He was born in Wayne County, IN. on June 7, 1920 to Clarence and Mabel (Waltz) Smith.
Raymond was a Veteran of WWII. He married Mary E. Shelley of New Castle on Dec. 15, 1945, exactly one month after his discharge from the Army. He retired from Chrysler Corp. in 1978. He attended Grace Baptist Church and the American Legion.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Smith, daughters Jean Blackburn of New Castle and Mary Lambert of Anderson, Daughter in law Glenda Smith of Rushville, IN. 5 grandchildren, Scott, Ryan (Tammie), Michael (Carol), Kelly and David, and 6 great grandchildren, sister Helen (Paul) Thompson of Spiceland, IN., brother Clarence Jr. (Judy) Smith of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his only son, James K. Smith, his parents and 6 brothers.
Services will be Monday January 9, 2012 at 2pm at Marcum Community Funeral Home. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 12pm-2pm Monday prior to service. Pastor Denny Neal will be officiating. Online condolences may be expressed at www.marcumfuneralhome.com
Military honors will be conducted by the local VFW and American Legion. Gary Marcum and staff is honored to serve the Smith family.
